Plovdiv lies to the southeast of the capital city Sophia and is the second largest city in Bulgaria. Situated along the Maritsa River, Plovdiv had once been a city connecting Western Europe to Asia and Africa. As it was an important crossroad, the city was widely influenced by the cultures of many countries and was considered a rich cultural center and we can see this through the various monuments and archeological sites that are found here. However, Plovdiv maintained its own cultural heritage that it traditionally carried through the ages.
The city presents its glorious past through it various historical attractions that include Neolithic settlements, Roman and Ottoman architecture and remains of fortifications from the medieval period. You can find several museums and art galleries, mosques and baths from the Ottoman period, two ancient Roman theatres and a number of archeological attractions here. The Roman Theatre and the Roman Stadium are well-preserved structures from the 2nd century. The Eirene Archeological complex and the remains of the settlement at Nebet Tepe are also intriguing sights.
It is a wealth of history and the charm of the old village that makes the city so entrancing. The quaint houses in the old town and the historical importance of the region make Plovdiv a significant city. The Archeological Museum, the Historical Museum, the Regional Ethnographic museum and a number of other museums along with a series of cathedrals and mosques can be explored. Apart from historical sites, there is a lot more things that tourist can see and do here in the form of activity as well as entertainment.
If you are keen on venturing out of Plovdiv, you can try the Pamporovo ski resort, 90 km south of the city or the spa resorts to the north. There are numerous monasteries like the 10th century Rila Monastery and the 14th century Kouklen Monastery and many other historical wonders with picturesque views and interesting histories that can be discovered here at Plovdiv. One can enjoy theatres and operas while the city hosts a series of other cultural events. Also there are hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars and roadside kiosks where you can have sumptuous Bulgarian meals.
Modern amenities, shopping centers and tourist facilities are offered here, making the city a strong tourist attraction. Plovdiv is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and the gem of Bulgaria as far as its historical importance can be considered.
