Situated on the eastern end of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana lies in the Altagracia Province being a part of the Punta Cana-Bavaro-Veron-Macao municipality. Punta Cana is well known for its white sandy beaches lined by luscious coconut palms and has for long been a most sought after tourist destination. 45 kilometers of beaches out of the 100 kilometers in the province are in Punta Cana with the neighboring Bàvaro, Cabeza de Toro and the El Cortecito beaches bordering Punta Cana. This part of the Dominican Republic has been inhabited from the time of Spanish colonialism with several fishing villages set up around this area. However with the development of Punta Cana as a tourist attraction, a whole lot of resorts, hotels, shopping centers, nightclubs and restaurants came up here, making Punta Cana a most popular tourism facility. The resorts offer modern amenities with tourist interests in mind. Various activities at the beaches are provided, which include swimming, snorkeling, fishing while activities such as horseback riding, mountain biking and paddle boating are also available.
Casinos remain open till the wee hours of the night, offering an exciting and enjoyable night out. Apart from the exciting nightlife and the beautiful beaches, the resorts at Punta Cana offer great gastronomical treats that tourists can savor. The town also has a number of professional golf courses that are situated at an hour’s distance from each other. Several more are expected to come up, making the place a golfer’s paradise too, besides being a marvelous seaside resort. When you are not spending time at the beaches or casinos, there are other things that you can do too.
The Manati Park Bàvaro, which has been specially created for tourism purposes, houses some beautiful birds, fish, reptiles and dolphins while the nearby Saona Island is an excellent place for a day excursion trip. There are a number of other tourist interest spots in and around Punta Cana that are worth making a trip to. You can visit the five-hundred year old city of Higüey, where the 1962 Basilica Catholic Monument can be visited. The Punta Cana International Airport serves the region and is the busiest airport with passenger traffic being much larger here than even the country’s capital.
