It is believed that Hévíz was also one of the many Roman visited spas. Romans were well-known for using therapeutic waters in the elaborate baths that they built for curative purposes. There is nothing of historical importance to see in Hévíz, but it is most famous for the Hévíz Spa and the Szent András Hospital, which specializes in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation. The lakes therapeutic powers were first discovered by the Festetics family who developed the lake into a spa. It was built as a bathing resort where guests could be accommodated with comfort.

The real development and its rise to fame took place when the resort changed ownership from the Festetics to Vencel Reischl in 1905. Apart from seeking cure from the curative waters of the lake, people could know receive medical attention too such as availing physiotherapy, power therapy and getting diagnosis tests done for receiving proper treatment. In 1948, the spa was taken over by the state and is today what is known as St Andrew’s Hospital. All this while, the number of visitors gradually increased making Hévíz a popular spa resort.

However, travelers have still to explore its beauty, as the town was never developed keeping in mind a tourist’s fancies. Since the generation of people visiting Hévíz is in the age group of 60 and above, the restaurants and bars close by eleven in the night and there is very little choice of food variety, but what little is available is quite delicious. One can enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscape, as Hévíz has an abundance of natural attractions which many people like to explore. The peaceful atmosphere of the town is also quite relaxing.
