Lying 53 km from the capital city Riga, in Latvia’s Vidzeme region, is the quaint little town of Sigulda nestled in the scenic Gauja river valley. On either side of the banks are cliffs and caves formed by red sandstone that give it the name, Switzerland of Vidzeme. Sigulda was developed as a tourist attraction after Latvia got its independence. The Sigulda Castle, built in the Middle Ages, plays host to a music festival that is held every summer in an open-air hall among the castle ruins. In May, there is an exciting Town Festival at the blossoming of the cherry trees.

Close to Sigulda Castle is the Gutmanis Cave, the largest in the Baltic and houses inscriptions from the early 17th century. A small stream flows here, the waters of which are believed to increase lifespan. If you go up the hills from the Gutmanis Cave, you will get to the cable car service, which you can take if you wish to get a picturesque view of the charming valley below. The ride is a real treat to the eye, apart from which it takes you to the Krimulda Manor, a guesthouse for noblemen in that era.

A little ahead of the cave is the Turaida Castle also from the Middle Ages, but in good condition as compared to the ruins of the Sigulda Castle. It used to be the home of the Archbishop during that period. The castle stands intact comprising of well-structured gardens, a museum, wooden church and a fine collection of sculptures. The Gauja National Park, the largest in Latvia lies all along the River Gauja from Sigulda to Cesis. Most of the park is forest while the park opens to several beautiful lakes inside the complex.

Those interested in outdoor sport can indulge in bobsledding, skiing and Luge in winter while bungee jumping is available throughout the year. Sigulda has a temperate climate, which keeps it cool and damp all year round. July and August are warm months with rainfall. Being at a higher altitude, Sigulda enjoys cooler climate as compared to the other nearby towns.
