Malé, the capital of the Republic of Maldives was the former King’s Island, as the Royal dynasties of the Maldives once ruled from here. Located on the southern end of North Malé Atoll, it is physically one of the smallest capitals in the world. It was originally a fortified city with beautiful forts and gates all of which were demolished along with the Royal Palace when the monarchy was abolished and a President’s rule was imposed in its place. The city combines a fine blend of ethnic and modern culture and the city infrastructure consists of both high-rise buildings and traditional structures.
The Malé International Airport on the close by island of Hulhule, which also has a base for seaplanes and some government buildings along the seafront, serves the city. Malé has a tropical climate with pleasant weather throughout the year. Although Malé is not one of the most impressive of islands in the Maldives, it has some significant places of interest. The Islamic Centre, which is an important city landmark, is an architectural beauty with its golden dome that dominates the building. A conference hall, library, offices and a mosque all form a part of this attractive structure.
The Huskuru Miskiiy Mosque is a grand masterpiece with elaborate Arabic inscriptions on the walls. The mosque complex also comprises of a minaret and a cemetery. The National Museum at Sultan Park is also worth a visit, as it tells you all about the city’s history and its past culture. As Malé is an island, it is obvious that one will find a lot of beaches here, besides the Maldives is known for its fascinating beaches and the varying blue colors of the sea that are nowhere to be found on earth. The city abounds in beach resorts and spas and has tourists visiting Malé from all parts of the world to relax at these serene holiday resorts.
Travelers can indulge in an array of beach activities and water sports besides snorkeling, diving, swimming and a whole lot of other outdoor activities that are offered at the beach resorts. If you are not into an activity mood, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful and serene atmosphere either at your resort or at one of the less active beaches. Maldives is a great holiday destination especially for those on a honeymoon, as the inviting beaches and the serenity of the islands provide honeymooners a secluded and peaceful holiday atmosphere.
