The beautiful and picturesque district of Fontvieille is located in the western region of the Principality of Monaco, the second smallest country in the world. The land was reclaimed in the 1970’s from the Mediterranean Sea and established into what we know as Fontvieille today. Fontvieille owes its existence and development largely to former Prince Rainier III of Monaco, who was also known as the Builder Prince. The Royal palace overlooks the district from across the Port of Fontvieille.
Places of tourist interest include the Museum of Antique Automobiles where you can see the royal collection of 85 vintage cars that belonged to Prince Rainier. The Princess Grace Rose Garden located in the charming marina along the sea is also worth visiting. If you are interested in stamps and old notes and coins, then you can visit the Stamps and Money Museum, which exhibits Monaco’s collection of old stamps and money.
Fontvieille is also famous for the Stade Louis II, which opened in 1985 and is the home ground of a popular Monaco football club, AS Monaco FC. The Louis II Stadium also comprises of besides the club offices, the International University of Monaco. The Monaco Heliport is located in the district and offers regular links to Nice Airport in France from where one can get connecting flights to various parts of Europe and New York.
