A picturesque resort town, Queenstown is located in Otago, southwest of South Island in New Zealand. The town is situated along Queenstown Bay surrounding Lake Wakatipu, a scenic lake formed by glacial activity. The resort town is most sought after by adventure tourists, as the town offers some great outdoor activities that include skiing, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, jet boarding, skateboarding, sky diving, among a variety of exciting sports. It is most popular for its ski resorts that are located on the four major mountain ski fields that surround the beautiful town. These include The Remarkables, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone and Coronet Peak.
Apart from providing some great adventure sports, Queenstown’s spectacular views and ideal location make the town a popular choice among honeymooners. Its vibrant nightlife is also a great attraction for many tourists. It offers sumptuous culinary delights apart from which it is in close proximity to the little wine-producing region in the southernmost tip of the world. This makes it convenient for the town to offer one of the best wines in the world, thereby adding to its attraction. Queenstown has also been a favorite as a great shooting location with major motion pictures being shot here, including the famous Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
The town is so mesmerizing that you would not get tired of it even if you just sat gazing at it for days. You could enjoy a trip on Lake Wakatipu aboard the prestigious Edwardian Steam Ship TSS Earnslaw. The Ben Lomond Mountain provides picturesque views and the climb up is not very difficult although it can take a few hours to get to its peak for the ultimate views of the town and the lake below. Day trips to Milford Sound and Mount Cook may also be undertaken. Getting to Queenstown is easy by road and air, but unfortunately the town has no railway system. Frequent buses arrive to the town from various regions, bringing in tourists to the attractive resort town. Queenstown International Airport is situated 10 km from the town and has regular flights from some major cities in Australia apart from which it caters to domestic flights too.
