The city and municipality of Trondheim is located in Sor Trondelag, at the confluence of the Nidelva River and Trondheimsfjorden facing a beautiful harbor. The settlement was established as a trading post in 997 and became the capital city of Norway under the Viking rule. The city has a rich history of different occupations, wars and massive fires that brought various changes to the city. Trondheim experiences a maritime climate and the best months to visit here are the months of May to September when the temperatures are between 14 to 20 degrees.
One of the chief attractions of the city is the Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishops Castle, both of which stand side by side in the city center. Having started construction in 1070, this beautiful cathedral is an important Gothic architectural building in Norway and was a significant Christian pilgrimage center in the Middle Ages. It is the world’s northernmost medieval cathedral in the world and Scandinavia’s second biggest. The Crown Jewels can be seen in the church museum. The Archbishop’s Castle houses archaeological findings and art collections of the region.
There are several museums that one can visit such as the National Museum of Decorative Arts, Sverresborg Castle, which has now been transformed into an open-air museum, Trondheim Science Museum, Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, which forms a part of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Smaller museums include the Trondheim Tramway Museum, Ringve National Museum and Trondheim Maritime Museum to name a few.
The Trondheim Airport, Vaernes in Stjordal is the fourth largest in Norway and caters to international air traffic. Railway connections are available for Sweden, Oslo and other major cities. Cruise ships also dock here besides Coastal Express Ships. The Trondheim Tramway and a bus network provide transport within the city.
