Al Khor meaning ‘creek’ in Arabic, is a coastal city in north Qatar lying 50 km from the capital city, Doha and was established much earlier than the capital. Due to its location on a creek, the city is named so. You can get to Al Khor by either following the North Road To Al-Ruweis or via the Coast Road that passes by the racetrack used for the Doha Moto GP race. Although the major occupation of the people residing in the city is fishing, a large part of its population works for the close by oil industry. Before this, Al Khor was the center for pearl trading.
The Al Mohanadi tribe, formed in the 18th century, ruled Al Khor before Qatar got its independence in 1971. It consists of 7 Bedouin families, which form the majority of citizens in the city. Al Khor is surrounded by beautiful beaches and is also famous for the Al Sultan Beach hotel & resort, which is a palace turned into a hotel. The city also has a large number of mosques of historical value as well as of modern architecture. The Corniche is a fine place to sunbathe or enjoy a fun game of beach volleyball. However, the water is too shallow to swim here.
