Serbia is not a much frequented tourist destination though it has some great scenic splendors and a few architectural beauties that are worth paying a visit. Apart from its capital Belgrade, there are other cities and towns that offer places of interest and picturesque landscapes that would interest a traveler anytime. However, a very often targeted tourist sight is the Ðerdap National Park, which tourists visiting Serbia, formerly Yugoslavia, make a point to visit. As tourism is being developed in the country, there are possibilities of more tourists visiting the region.
The Ðerdap National Park is situated close to the Romanian border in Eastern Serbia, stretching along the Danube River, all the way from the Golubac Fortress to the dam close to Sip. The nearby town of Donji Milanovac is where the park office is situated. The Ðerdap National Park is famous for its natural beauty and the picturesque Ðerdap Gorge, also well known as the prestigious Iron Gate, which is a grand entrance on the southern end near the Carpathian Mountains where the water accumulation of the gigantic Danube River is to be found.
In fact this beautiful gorge stretches about a 100 km and comprises of four gorges that are separated by ravines that cut across the river valley. Gospođin Vir, which is one of the gorges, records the deepest water level in a river across the world while Kazan records the narrowest river bed. As is obvious, that since this is a national park; one will find a variety of species of animals and plant life here. Apart from this, the park also has some classic monuments from the past along with other tourist attractions.
The places of interest include the Lepenski Vir, which is an 8,000 year old architectural wonder that still shows remains of a settlement dating back to the Neolithic period. Besides this glorious wonder, there is the Golubac Fortress, Diana of Kladovo, which is a Roman fortress and some of the remains of the bridge, roads, forest reserves, monuments etc. It was the building of the Dam that opened the doors of the country to the tourists with people visiting the park for its natural beauty and its flora and fauna.
The park is easily accessible from the Danube River from various cities along the river. There are a number of hotels and restaurants within the park, which makes it possible for tourists to find places to stay. The monuments inside the park are also worth exploring while the neighboring towns and villages too offer some great places of tourist interest. One can even indulge in fishing in the Danube River while boat excursions on the river are also available to visit the nearby towns.
