Cordoba is a fascinating city in Andalusia in southern Spain with a rich cultural history that dates back to the Middle Ages when it was a Roman and an Iberian city. It later came to be the largest city in the world when it became the stronghold of an Islamic Caliphate. Its diverse culture is noticeable in its beautiful architecture of different eras and the rich cultural heritage that has been handed down through the ages. Cordoba is a city where Christians, Muslims and Jews all lived together peacefully centuries ago. It is undoubtedly the most beautiful city in Spain.
Situated in a deep valley on the banks of the river Guadalquivir, this mesmerizing city experiences a Mediterranean climate. The busiest tourist time is in the month of May due to its climate while it is also the time for Cordoba’s three grand festivals, the May Crosses Festival, the Patios Festival and the Cordoba Fair. Contests are held and floral decorations are made, which are then judged for the best entries. Also one can enjoy some wonderful gastronomical treats that are traditional cuisines of the Spaniards. During the festive time it is hard to find reservations at the hotels.
Apart from the festivals Cordoba has some of the most gorgeous architectures of the past that are a must see attraction. The Great Cordoba Mosque dating back to 784, the 14th century Cordoba Synagogue, a series of 13th century Fernandine and Alphonsine Churches such as Santa Marina, San Lorenzo and San Pablo to name a few are some of the great sites to visit. Also one can see numerous convents and monasteries. The 1489 Walcha Caves is another site worth visiting. The 14th century Alcazar of the Christian Kings, the Tower of Calahorra, Puerta del Puente and Torre de la Malmuerta are yet more sites that can be explored.
Archeological remains of Roman and Islamic history include the Roman Temple, the Roman Theatre, one of the largest in Roman Hispania, Archeological site of Cercadilla, Roman Mausoleum and the Roman Bridge. As for the Islamic archeological remains, there are the Guadalquivir Mills and the 10th century Madinat-al-Zahra. Apart from this Cordoba has a huge number of museums and public parks that would interest many a tourist. It can be said that Cordoba is truly a paradise in Andalusia and a city that cannot just be skipped by when in Spain.
